The 8 Limbs of Yoga Explained

Yoga is often misunderstood in the modern world as merely physical exercise. While Asana is an essential part, it is only one of the eight limbs described by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

1. Yamas (Ethical Restraints)

The first limb deals with our interaction with the world: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (moderation), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).

2. Niyamas (Internal Observances)

Personal discipline: Saucha (cleanliness), Santosha (contentment), Tapas (self-discipline), Svadhyaya (self-study), Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender).

3. Asana (Physical Postures)

The purpose is to prepare the body to sit comfortably for meditation (Sthira Sukham Asanam).

4. Pranayama (Breath Control)

Through breath regulation, yogis purify their energy channels and calm the mind. Explore the techniques of this fourth limb in our pranayama hub.

5–8. Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi

The inner limbs: withdrawal of senses, concentration, meditation, and finally absorption — where the meditator and the object of meditation merge into one.

At Anantadrishti Yoga, we integrate these eight limbs into our Teacher Training Courses.
