The Purpose of Pranayama

According to Ashtanga Yoga, the highest purpose of Pranayama is controlling or balancing the mind. That balanced mind becomes the platform for deeper understanding of the ideology of Yoga.

In Hatha Yoga, Pranayama is about balancing different pranas (energies) and chakras (energy centers). The tradition links this work with the awakening of Kundalini; on this retreat, students simply observe how the practices influence their energy and awareness.

This immersion integrates breath, mantra, mudra, and awareness to observe their influence on mind, body, neurology, and energetic systems.

What the Retreat Includes

Breath, rest and stillness for a few days in Rishikesh. Kumbhaka with the bandhas, nadi and chakra pranayamas are taught progressively in the Advanced Pranayama Course.
  1. Daily Pranayama

Guided breathing practice every day, with time to observe its effects on the mind and emotions.

  2. Mudras & Bija Mantras

Hand gestures and seed sounds practised with the breath, and their influence observed.

  3. Slow, Steady Breath

Unhurried breathing practices, with attention to how they settle the body and the nervous system.

  4. Awareness & Observation

Watching how each practice influences the mind, body and energy, and developing meditative inner awareness.

  5. Rest & Reflection

Quiet time between sessions to rest and let the practice settle.

  6. Rishikesh & the Ganga

Time between sessions to walk down to the Ganga in Tapovan, or simply sit by the river.
