Tapovan is a quiet, elevated neighborhood on the northern edge of Rishikesh, perched above the Ganges with views of the Himalayan foothills. While the main town of Rishikesh and nearby Laxman Jhula bustle with tourists, Tapovan offers the perfect balance: close enough to access everything you need, yet peaceful enough for deep, uninterrupted practice.

Why Tapovan for Yoga Study?

Most established yoga schools, including Anantadrishti Yoga, are located in Tapovan for good reason:

  • Quieter environment — Away from the tourist bustle of Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula, the atmosphere is more conducive to study and meditation.
  • Elevated position — Perched on a cliff above the Ganges, the views are stunning and the air is cleaner.
  • Yoga community density — A high concentration of quality yoga schools means you're surrounded by fellow practitioners.
  • Walking distance to everything — Cafes, shops, ATMs, and the riverside are all within a 10–15 minute walk.

Getting to Tapovan

By Air

The nearest airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), about 22 km from Rishikesh; allow 45 minutes to an hour by taxi to Tapovan. Prepaid taxis wait outside arrivals, and we can help arrange a pickup at extra cost if you send us your flight details when you enquire.

By Train

The closest railway stations are Haridwar (25 km) and Rishikesh (10 km). From either station, pre-paid taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available. The ride from Haridwar to Tapovan costs ₹500–₹800 by taxi.

By Road from Delhi

Private taxis, Volvo buses, and shared cabs connect Delhi to Rishikesh. The 240 km journey takes 5–7 hours depending on traffic. Overnight Volvo sleeper buses (₹600–₹1,200) are a comfortable option.

Amenities and Daily Life

Tapovan has everything a yoga student needs within walking distance:

  • Cafés and restaurants — Dozens of vegetarian cafés serving everything from traditional Indian thali to Italian pasta and Israeli hummus. Popular spots: The Sitting Elephant, Freedom Café, Café De Goa.
  • Shops — Yoga clothing, mala beads, essential oils, books — Tapovan's shops cater specifically to yoga students.
  • ATMs — SBI and ICICI ATMs are available, though they occasionally run out of cash. Always keep some emergency cash.
  • Pharmacies — Basic medicines and first-aid supplies are available at multiple medical shops.
  • Laundry — Most accommodations offer laundry services for ₹80–₹120 per kg.

Things to Do on Free Days

Our pranayama course meets from 07:30 to 09:00 and from 11:30 to 13:00, so your afternoons are free, and Sunday is a rest day. Tapovan is a great base for exploring:

  • Waterfall treks — Neer Garh waterfall is a 30-minute walk from Tapovan. Pack water and snacks.
  • River rafting — 16 km or 26 km rafting trips on the Ganges (₹600–₹1,500).
  • Visit the Beatles Ashram — The abandoned Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram (now an art park) is a 30-minute walk.
  • Evening Ganga Aarti — Head to Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan for the spectacular nightly fire ceremony.
  • Café hopping — Explore Tapovan's eclectic food scene. Sunday mornings are particularly lively.

Safety Tips

  • Drink only filtered or bottled water
  • Walk carefully at night — some roads have limited lighting
  • Carry a torch (flashlight) for evening walks
  • Respect local customs and dress modestly outside the yoga shala
  • Don't swim in the Ganges alone — currents can be strong
