Breathwork certification

Breathwork Certification in Rishikesh: Build the Practice First

A breathwork certification teaches you to lead other people's breathing. It rests on your own practice. Our Advanced Pranayama Course in Rishikesh builds that practice in depth, over 7, 15 or 30 days. It is a practitioner course: it is not a yoga teacher training and does not lead to a teaching qualification.

Choosing a programme

What a breathwork certification should cover

A credible breathwork training usually covers these six areas. Use them to compare programmes, wherever you study.
  1. Pranayama foundations

Ujjayi, Anulom Vilom, Kapalbhati, Bhramari, Sheetali and Sheetkari, diaphragmatic breathing, breath awareness, and ratio breathing (sama and vishama vritti).

  2. Retention and the bandhas

Kumbhaka (breath retention) with Mula, Uddiyana, Jalandhara and Maha bandha, Bhastrika, and Surya and Chandra bhedana, learned slowly and safely.

  3. Breathwork science

The autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve, heart rate variability, respiratory physiology and CO2 tolerance, presented with care about what the research does and does not show.

  4. Teaching methodology

Sequencing and progression, cueing and demonstration, and adapting practices for different students.

  5. Safety and contraindications

Who should not practise retention or forceful breathing, how to screen students, and when to refer someone to a doctor.

  6. Supervised practice

Teaching under supervision with feedback, and a practical assessment of how you lead a session.

  • Whichever course you choose, the practice is also a study. In all three courses, students observe how each practice influences four areas, and learn to read those changes over the days.
  • Mudras (hand gestures) and bija mantras (seed syllables) are coordinated with the practices, and you observe their influence in the same four areas.

Questions

Does the Advanced Pranayama Course include a breathwork certification?

No. It is an in-depth practitioner course: it is not a yoga teacher training and does not lead to a teaching qualification. If you plan to train as a breathwork facilitator, a deep personal practice of pranayama is a strong foundation for it.

Do I need experience? Can beginners join?

Some prior yoga or breathing practice helps. Healthy, sincere beginners can join the 7-day course. Tell us about your experience when you enquire, and we will help you choose.

Is kumbhaka (breath retention) safe? Who should be careful?

Kumbhaka is taught with the bandhas, starting with short, comfortable holds, and is never forced. It is not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant, or have high blood pressure, a heart condition, recent surgery, glaucoma or raised eye pressure, epilepsy, or a serious psychiatric condition, consult your doctor before booking and tell the teacher. The course is not medical treatment.
